We live in a Society

We Live in A Society, Porcelain vessel, 2022

I have decided to create a new series of works consisting of Delftware inspired vessels with designs that engage with the contemporary cultural moment. This will include the current trans rights discourse but also engage with digital culture. This series of pots will be a way for me to make work that directly comments on current events and culture. As a trans woman in a time that seems to become increasingly hostile environment for trans people here in the UK as well as the USA, at a time when most communications happen online, I want to be able to directly respond with my work.

“We Live in A Society” is meant to capture this particular moment where discourse happens on our social media in an ever more farcical way. Bringing online memes, discourse and slogans onto pottery reveals the ephemerality of digital infrastructure. A digital post will become obsolete within our lifetime, but a pot will stay for hundreds if not thousands of years. I want to raise questions about the value of images, words, and how we relate to them.

I will continue my crawler pots alongside this new project. For now, the “We Live in A Society” collection will not be for sale as I want to display the work for a bit before finding a new home for them. I will not rule out putting them up for sale at some point in the future.
